Walking in Colourful Trinidad – Cuba
|When you go for Cuba you will definitely visit Trinidad too!! It is a beautiful city where you will see a lot of Cuban life on the streets. You will hear the music everywhere, you see old men smoking big siars and all that in the great colourful surrounding of those historical houses and buildings!

After my arrival in Trinidad I got picked up by a taxi arranged by my casa. It was a the kind of tricycle that you see a lot. At the busstation a lot of Jineteros will wait for you to bring you to a casa they earn money with. Read more about this phenomenon and the Casas of Cuba. When I checked in and had a good coffee in the yard of my casa I read the Lonely Planet and saw a route they described in the city of Trinidad. I got a map of Trinidad and was good to go!!

Walking through colourful Trinidad
I walked to the point where the LP route started. I read that the end of the afternoon was the best part of the day because of the sun setting and shining on the houses. Those colourful houses would lit up and give a great glow! I walked around the city first and started at sunset.
Plaza Mayor – Trinidad
The walk started in a central part of the town, Plaza Mayor. I heard the great Cuban music coming out of the different restaurants. It gave it all a great ambiance. I walked along side the church that dominates the square and walked to the park. In front of this park is a museum that shows you how the revolution took place in Cuba. This museum is one to enter….only if it would be to go up the tower and get that great view over Trinidad. The route went on in this street and you go out of the centre and into a part that feels less touristic.
You are starting to see the local life around here…. if it only would be for this reason.. you should do this walk!!

Walking in colourful Trinidad – Cuba
Within a couple of streets I start wandering and so lost the route that the Lonely Planet gives you lost. I went a couple of streets extra 🙂 What I liked seeing is that some other tourists were checking their map a couple of time….hesitated …but went along with me those extra streets!!
At some point we lost those great cobblestone streets. Those cobblestones that are heritage from the times that slaves were being brought here in ships.. That knowlegde made it a bit strange… They were in the ships, on the bottom to keep balance.. At some point we got out of the touristic part of town and were the streets not that good anymore. Sometimes even just sand, the community needs to make their own road I heard in Playa Largo. So when you don’t have much money, can’t find the building materials, which is not always easy too, your street will remain sand.
At this house they sold their goods in the windowsill
Walking in colourful Trinidad you’ll get to see all kinds of small shops. These kinds of shops belongs to the past in Holland, everything has been taken over by the big concerns. I loved seeing those small independent shops!!
Wouldn’t you love to see this too? Just to be part of their life for a moment.. I loved tasting the ambiance of Cuban life. It is a tough life but seeing how they interact with eachother….how they work things out together…
I loved walking here and looking at all the people and replying to them: ‘Ola’
This is a experience you should have too!!
Walking in Colourful Trinidad
You can find this route, how it is shared first and original at page 279 of the Lonely Planet of Cuba. Do know that mine was longer and I took some extra streets to wander around outside of the touristic citycentre.
