High in the mountains of Costa Rica lies Monteverde, an area that lives up to its name “green mountain” in every way. This isn’t just another destination but a place where nature envelops you in a veil of mist, where countless hummingbirds dart through the air, and where adventure literally awaits around every corner.
What to do in Monteverde, you ask? From ziplining through the cloud forest to wildlife spotting on a night tour, this guide covers the best attractions, top restaurants, and most comfortable hotels. Note that 1 day isn’t enough in Monteverde, plan at least 2-3 days during your Costa Rica itinerary.

Ziplining in Monteverde: Soaring Through the Treetops
Our first adventure was booked long before our trip began—the Monteverde ziplines, of course! These ziplines are among the most spectacular in Costa Rica. When someone asked in our group chat, “Should we go ziplining?” the answer was unanimous in no time: YES!
We were all looking forward to it, though I’ll admit we had some nervous excitement. It turned out to be 13 different lines we’d be tackling, culminating in a 1.5 km (yes, 1.5 kilometers!) zipline and finishing with the Tarzan Swing!

Imagine it: with your feet dangling above the cloud forest, you zip from platform to platform through the tree canopy.

The view was truly breathtaking—a sea of green stretching out beneath me, reaching to the horizon. These cloud forests (bosque nuboso) near Monteverde are often shrouded in mist, which can add even more excitement. We had clear weather, and as one travel companion later said: “Did you see all that broccoli below us?” referring to the green sea of cloud forest beneath us.
It was an afternoon full of adrenaline and an incredible nature experience rolled into one spectacular adventure.
Have only 1 day to spend here? Then definitely book this awesome zipline experience!
Butterflies in Color: The Butterfly Gardens
Do you find butterflies and insects interesting? Then the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens offer a fantastic experience. We were warmly welcomed and taken on a journey where the small insects—sometimes large ones too—truly came to life. I’m not afraid of them, and I actually enjoy relocating one rather than killing it if it’s somewhere I’d rather it not be. I can assure you that after this visual explanation, my travel companions gained much more appreciation and understanding of the value of insects. For that reason alone, it’s a must-visit!

In large greenhouses, hundreds of butterflies flutter in all colors of the rainbow. From bright blue morphos to delicate glasswings, you literally walk through a living painting. The guide enthusiastically explained the life cycle of these wonderful insects. With a bit of luck, one will land on your hand or shoulder, and you can capture it beautifully in a photo.

Hiking in the Monteverde Cloud Forest
The hiking trails around Monteverde offer an intimate introduction to the cloud forest. The humid, cool climate has created a unique ecosystem where trees are covered with mosses, ferns, and orchids. Every bit of surface seems to be covered with something green. The paths lead you through dense rainforest where bromeliads grow like small gardens in the tree branches and where the filtered light creates an almost mystical atmosphere.

Curi Cancha Reserve
A highly recommended spot is the Curi Cancha Reserve, a small-scale reserve of 83 hectares that’s much quieter than the better-known Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The park limits the number of visitors to a maximum of 50 per day, giving you a much better chance of spotting wildlife. With about 200 bird species, this is the place for bird lovers. You have a good chance of seeing the rare resplendent quetzal, toucans, or motmots here—though we weren’t that lucky. We did see many hummingbirds. We had naturally hoped for sloths, monkeys, and agutis, but they didn’t show themselves.

The 7 kilometers of well-maintained hiking trails can be walked in a few hours, making it ideal if you don’t want to hike all day. You’ll get a map to navigate through the park; the trails have names like Manga, Leo, and Alondra trail. You’ll find a labyrinth, a garden where many butterflies and birds can be found, and a spot where hummingbirds frequently visit the flowers. During your walk through the Curi Cancha Reserve, you’ll get beautiful views and walk through the dense cloud forest.

Special Hiking Tip in Monteverde Behind Hotel Montaña runs a beautiful hiking trail where you have good chances of spotting monkeys and beautiful birds. I saw the colorful motmot there—a bird you’ll recognize by its long tail with two “rackets” at the end. This colorful bird with its turquoise and green feathers is one of the most photogenic residents of the cloud forest.

Keep your eyes open during all your hikes for the rich flora and fauna. Hummingbirds flutter everywhere in the natural environment (no special café needed!), and the resplendent quetzal, one of the most beautiful birds in the world, lives here. Unfortunately, I didn’t see this one on my trip through Costa Rica, but I did see toucans and countless other beautiful colorful bird species. The biodiversity in Monteverde is enormous: more than 100 species of mammals and 400 bird species.
Tip for bird spotters: Download the free Merlin Bird ID app before you go. This app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology recognizes birds by their sound and by photos, and works offline. Simply let the app listen and discover which birds you hear singing in the cloud forest. It adds a whole new dimension to your walks!
During my trip through Costa Rica, I saw bird names appear on my screen such as sugar thief, small streaked-throated hermit hummingbird / green hermit hummingbird, montezuma oropendola, great kiskadee, summer tanager and yellow-throated toucan. The nice thing about this app is that it shows you which ones you can hear, with the name turning yellow at that moment.

Night Tour in Monteverde: Wildlife Spotting After Dark
Monteverde shows a completely different face once the sun sets. A nightwalk through the cloud forest is an absolute must. Armed with a flashlight, you discover a world that remains hidden during the day. Colorful frogs emerge, snakes hunt for prey, and large spiders sit in their webs waiting. The sound of the nocturnal cloud forest is also very different: crickets, frogs, and other nocturnal animals create a symphony you never hear during the day.

It’s a bit exciting but mostly fascinating to experience the forest this way.

Eating in Monteverde: Restaurant Tips Santa Elena
After such an intensive adventure, a good meal tastes even better. In the town of Santa Elena, you’ll find quite a few restaurants, and I can highlight three:
Jungle Restaurant surprises with an unexpected but delicious combination: authentic Thai and Indian dishes in the middle of the Costa Rican cloud forest. The flavors are intense, the spices perfectly balanced, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
Orchid Coffee Restaurant is the perfect place for lunch. The dishes are fresh and local, and after your meal, you can enjoy excellent Costa Rican coffee, here in the heart of one of the best coffee regions in the world. I had the fresh spring rolls and found them delicious, especially with the peanut sauce.

Where to Stay in Monteverde: Hotel Tips
Casa de la Montaña is on the edge of town, right in the middle of nature. It’s the perfect base for those who want to be surrounded by the sounds of the cloud forest and wake up in the morning with birds as neighbors. And what neighbors! In the garden of Casa de la Montaña, you can easily spot howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys in the trees, toucans flying from branch to branch, and the agouti, a cute rodent that looks like a large guinea pig on legs, calmly foraging through the garden. You don’t even need to leave the property for serious wildlife spotting. From Casa de la Montaña, you can walk to Santa Elena in half an hour to dine or have lunch.
For those who prefer to stay further outside Monteverde and value sustainability, Hotel Belmar is an absolute must. This family business opened its doors in 1985 and is now the only hotel in Monteverde with the highest level (Level 5) of CST certification (Certificate for Sustainable Tourism). The hotel has also been CO2-neutral certified since 2019, an achievement they’re rightfully proud of.
The hotel has its own nature reserve with walking trails that you can explore directly from the hotel, an organic farm (Finca Madre Tierra) that you can visit, and even its own microbrewery.

More Attractions in Monteverde
Monteverde has much more to offer for those who take the time:
The hanging bridges – a system of high suspension bridges through the treetops gives a unique perspective on the cloud forest. You literally walk at eye level with the birds and can admire the biodiversity of the canopy. There’s also a TreeTram you can book, which brings another unique perspective. We walked on the hanging bridges during our trip in Mistico NP.
- Book the Hanging Bridges and Treetram in Monteverde
Coffee and chocolate tours – learn everything about the process from bean to cup and from cacao bean to chocolate. Costa Rica has a rich coffee culture, and the tours are informative and ofcourse delicious.
In the nearby town of Los Tornos, you can combine the coffee & chocolate tour with a night walk where you’ll discover the wonders of nature in the evening. During our Costa Rica trip, we did 2 night walks and were very surprised by the diversity of insects and animals you spot, think of colorful frogs & snakes, spiders, but also sleeping birds.

The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve – a less touristy alternative to the famous Monteverde Reserve, but equally beautiful and often with fewer visitors.

From La Fortuna to Monteverde: How to Get There
Monteverde is about 3 to 3.5 hours’ drive from La Fortuna (near the Arenal volcano), a popular combination during a Costa Rica road trip. The road is mostly unpaved and bumpy, but the journey is worth it. A rental car (preferably a 4×4) gives you the most freedom. You can also choose to drive around Lake Arenal, which offers beautiful views and allows you to bypass part of the unpaved road. The mileage differs greatly, but the travel time remains the same.
There are also shuttle buses between the destinations. Santa Elena is the main village where you’ll find most hotels and restaurants.

After Monteverde: To the Pacific Coast
After the cool cloud forest of Monteverde, most travelers head to the sunny beaches on the Pacific coast, a wonderful contrast. The most popular route goes via Jacó and Playa Hermosa to Quepos and Manuel Antonio.
Monteverde to Jacó is a drive of about 2.5 to 3 hours (approximately 120 km). The route takes you from the mountains to the coast and is very doable. Daily shuttle buses run (around $55-65 per person) at 8:00 and 14:00, or you can drive with your own rental car.
Playa Hermosa (right near Jacó) is a quiet surf village, perfect for a stopover. It’s only 10 minutes’ drive from the livelier Jacó. Here you can relax after all the adventure in Monteverde.
We stayed at Cabinas Brisa del Mar where we enjoyed their pool, open outdoor kitchen, and the beach.

Quepos and the mangroves are about 1 hour’s drive south of Jacó. A mangrove tour in Quepos is an absolute must; you sail through the mangrove channels and spot crocodiles, monkeys, birds, and with luck even sloths. Quepos is also the gateway to the famous Manuel Antonio National Park.
We stayed at La Comarca River Glamping, a beautiful spot in nature.
This route from Monteverde via the coast to Manuel Antonio is one of the most popular combinations during a Costa Rica road trip, and perfectly combines mountain nature with beach relaxation.

And then I almost forgot to share this one, the white-snouted coati. You may also encounter these in groups. They look cute and are curious, but keep your distance. They are wild animals and therefore remain unpredictable.
