Bari Italy Travel Guide: The Perfect 2-Day Weekend Itinerary in Puglia

Bari Italy is calling. While tourists flock to Rome and Florence, this Adriatic gem in Puglia offers something rare: authentic Italian life without the crowds. Picture yourself watching nonnas roll fresh orecchiette in sunlit doorways, tasting focaccia that’s been perfected since 1947, and wandering medieval alleyways where laundry flutters overhead and locals still gather on their stoops.

Planning a weekend in Bari Italy? You’ve chosen wisely. This compact port city delivers the essence of Southern Italy in just two days, no rushing required. From the relics of Santa Claus himself to fried polenta on street corners, from Byzantine treasures to raw sea urchins at the old port, Bari serves up experiences you simply won’t find anywhere else.

This complete Bari travel guide reveals the best things to do, where locals actually eat, and how to experience the real Puglia, the one that exists beyond the tourist brochures.

Bari, the capital of Puglia, is one of Southern Italy’s hidden gems. While Rome and Florence overflow with tourists, this Adriatic port city offers an authentic Italian experience. With direct flights from major European cities, Bari is surprisingly accessible for a weekend getaway.

Why Bari is the Perfect Choice for Your Next Italy Trip

Day 1: Discover the Historic Heart and Local Secrets

Morning: The Orecchiette Ladies and Città Vecchia (9:00 AM)

Start your day early on Strada delle Orecchiette (officially Strada Arco Basso). Timing is crucia, arrive before 10:00 AM when the nonnas (grandmothers) are just beginning. I was there around 9 AM and should have been slightly earlier. A tour group also arrived on Strada Arco Alto, where I was walking.

Here you’ll witness ancient techniques: local women making fresh orecchiette (“little ears”) right in their doorways with lightning-fast wrist movements.

Important note: Not all pasta being sold is genuinely handmade. For quality pasta, head to Cala Tin Puglia.

Then explore the rest of Città Vecchia, this labyrinth of narrow streets and white houses where real Apulian families still live. I wandered through many alleys and often found myself in the same spot from different angles. Eventually, I took the smaller alleyways and sometimes walked through narrow, dark streets that seemed frozen in time. I love that!

One of the charming details: most doors stand wide open, filling the streets with sounds of music, animated conversations, and clattering pots and pans from kitchens. You can’t peek inside though, a curtain preserves the privacy while keeping the connection to street life alive.

Basilica di San Nicola: The Santa Claus Connection

The Basilica di San Nicola isn’t just any church, it houses the relics of Saint Nicholas, the inspiration for Santa Claus! This basilica from 1087 is a masterpiece of Apulian Romanesque architecture. When you’re inside, don’t forget to look up.

Practical info: Free entrance, open 8:00 AM-12:30 PM and 3:30 PM-7:00 PM.

Lunch: Taste the Real Focaccia Barese

Forget everything you thought you knew about focaccia. Focaccia barese is a local specialty with tomatoes, olives, and oregano. Visit Panificio Fiore (since 1947) for the best version in town, just behind the San Nicola church.

Afternoon: Castle and Promenade Walk

Castello Normanno-Svevo tells the story of Bari’s rich history. You’ll find this castle where you admired the orecchiette this morning.

After your visit, take a lovely walk along the Lungomare Nazario Sauro. This is the promenade along the Adriatic Sea with benches and palm trees, perfect for a relaxing stroll with sea views.

Aperitivo: Sgagliozze on Str. del Carmine

Around 5:00 PM, you can buy sgagliozze near Str. del Carmine (no. 46). I’d read about them but thought they’d be at Largo Albicocca (Le Sgagliozze di Donna Carmela). This is where the legendary Maria delle Sgagliozze made them on-site for decades. Sgagliozze are fried polenta cubes and I must say they looked quite appetizing. I went to the square and there was nothing happening when I was there (perhaps I was still too early).

For 10 sgagliozze, you pay €2.00. I’d just eaten a great meal and for one person, 10 of those cubes is quite a lot.

Extra at Largo Albicocca: Besides sgagliozze, they also serve fave e cicoria, orecchiette con cime di rapa (in season), and riso, patate e cozze.

Evening: Authentic Pasta with the Locals

Top restaurant choices:

  1. Osteria Le Arpie (book 1 day ahead!) – Small tables in a narrow alley, fresh homemade pasta, absolute local favorite
  2. La Uascézze – Local favorite by the water, traditional Barese dishes
  3. Antò – Cucina tipica pugliese – Their orecchiette with cime di rapa and anchovies is legendary

I ate at Antò and had the Orecchiette cime di rapa. I loved it!

Try: Orecchiette con cime di rapa (Puglia’s iconic dish), braciole al sugo, or fresh fish.

Apulian Tradition: Dried Cactus Pads

While wandering through Bari Vecchia, I saw dried cactus pads (pala di fico d’India) hanging on facades. This turned out to be an ancient tradition when I asked a local family on the street. They said it brings luck, symbols of prosperity.

Day 2: Off-the-Beaten-Path Bari and Modern Contrasts

Morning: The Real Bari – Where Locals Go

Tired of tourist crowds? Discover authentic Bari:

Pane e Pomodoro Beach (Madonnella district) The go-to beach for locals. No fancy beach bars, just towel on the sand. Named after the simple dish of bread and tomato that families ate here. In the morning, you’ll see elderly people doing their daily exercises.

Pane e Pomodoro, city beach in Bari

I felt like going to the beach, so I went to Pane e Pomodoro. Just relax, dip my toes, and soak up the atmosphere. Looking for more action than relaxation on this second morning of your Bari city trip?

Then discover one of these neighborhoods:

  • Santo Spirito (northern district) Lively neighborhood with its own little harbor and promenade, authentic maritime atmosphere. Especially beautiful in the evening with lit promenade. Restaurants serving typical Apulian dishes.
  • Torre a Mare (southern district) Picturesque district with small marina and village atmosphere, popular with locals for coffee by the sea. Many young people from Bari come here—10 minutes on the ring road.
  • Quartiere Umbertino Hipster-ish, popular with locals for avoiding tourists. A bit rough around the edges but authentic.

Alternative: Modern Bari and Museum Visit

Start your day in Bari Centrale, the modern part. The straight avenues form a nice contrast with the medieval old town.

Hidden gem: Visit the free Museo Archeologico di Santa Scolastica. A museum with fascinating artifacts from Byzantines, Normans, and ancient Greeks.

The Fish Market: Theater and Traditions

Mercato del Pesce is more than just a fish market, it’s supposed to be a must-visit. Fishermen praise their catch, locals negotiate passionately. Come early (around 8:00 AM) for the best experience. I’ll definitely come back to Bari for this show.

Crudo barese, Bari’s own raw fish tradition dating back to Neolithic times. At the old port, fishermen serve their daily catch raw, this can be mussels, oysters, octopus, and other fish. And do you dare try these raw sea urchins (ricci di mare) with bread?

Day Trip from Bari: Alberobello (Trulli)

You won’t find trulli in Bari itself, these iconic cone-shaped houses are found in the Itria Valley. Alberobello has the highest concentration with over 1,500 trulli (UNESCO World Heritage). This has of course been discovered by the masses. I’m going there in autumn and expect fairly quiet streets then.

Getting there from Bari:

  • Train: 2 hours + bus (€5-8 return)
  • Rental car: 50-minute drive
  • Time in Alberobello: 2-3 hours is sufficient

Insider tip: Also explore other streets like Rione Aia Piccola instead of just the touristy Rione Monti, people still live here, which makes it much more authentic.

Why Bari is Perfect for a Short Stay

Bari combines the best of both worlds: the charm of a historic Italian city with the vibrancy of a modern port city. In a day and a half, you’ll taste the essence of Southern Italy without feeling rushed.
