In this blog about the Camino de Ronda (Cami de Ronda), I’ll take you through everything you need to know about walking along the Catalan coast. The Camino de Ronda is a long-distance hiking trail along the Wild Coast (Costa Brava) of Spain. The Camino de Ronda is also known as the GR92 Costa Brava or Cami de Ronda. I walked 6 wonderful stages on the Camino de Ronda and can highly recommend the coastal route.
Walking along the Catalan coast is always a good idea, as it brings with it a wonderful Mediterranean atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed the views offered by the Camino de Ronda over the rugged coastline of the Costa Brava.
The great thing about such a walking route is that in the late afternoon and evenings you have time to explore the various villages. What more could you want from a lovely Spanish walking holiday?
Walking along the Catalan coast – GR92 Costa Brava – Spain

The Camino de Ronda is also referred to as GR92. This is the European designation for the long-distance walks that can be found throughout Europe. The GR92 is much longer and starts in Banyuls sur Mer and ends after more than 800 km in Tarifa. The Spanish name for this path is Sender Mediterraneo and has 41 stages.
How long is the Camino de Ronda
The Camino de Ronda is a walk along the Catalan Coast and starts at Portbou; after approximately 190 km you can finish at Blanes. Most route indications I find end at Lloret de Mar and that’s exactly where I started. If you’re going to walk along the Catalan coast and do the entire Camino de Ronda, you can complete it in 10 days.
Marking on the Camino de Ronda
The Camino de Ronda, or Cami de Ronda, is well marked with the familiar red/white flags. I’m walking in the opposite direction but that’s very doable because the GR92 is clearly marked for both walking directions. Here and there I also come across signs with the name Sender Mediterraneo.

Camino de Ronda stages
The Camino de Ronda has 10 stages. These will almost always bring you to places where you can find accommodation. When I walked there at the end of 2023, I couldn’t find accommodation in Roses on stage 4 and so I stopped my walk along the Catalan coast in L’escala. So I walked stage 10 through 4 during my week on the Camino de Ronda.

GPX files of the Camino de Ronda
While walking along the Catalan coast, I used the GPX files from the German website wandern.de daily. I found their descriptions and files very helpful and therefore like to share them with you.

I started this walk along the Catalan coast in the well-known town of Lloret de Mar. Shortly before, I had been on Mallorca and walked a number of stages of the GR221. Really a beautiful walk and I truly enjoyed it, but the accommodations were a bit too pricey for me, so I chose to go to mainland Spain and walk on the GR92.
I walked the Camino de Ronda again with walking poles. I can really recommend this – the route has quite a few easy-to-walk paths but will also make you climb considerably and sometimes descend steeply. It was precisely on those Camino de Ronda stages that I found it very nice to have my walking poles with me.
Day-by-day report of the Camino de Ronda – GR92 Costa Brava
Stage Lloret de Mar – Tossa de Mar – 13 km
It had been a stormy day before, but when I left the weather was fine and the sea calm again. I really walked over magnificent paths along the wild coast. Immediately I was very happy with my decision to walk this path along the wild coast of the Costa Brava. What a unique area again! After a beautiful coastal walk I went somewhat inland where I could enjoy a nice cup of coffee on a terrace before continuing.
Then the Camino de Ronda brought me back to the beach where I briefly enjoyed the peace and the fine sand under my feet. When I continued I came through a nature area and shortly after I descended into Tossa de Mar. This first day had really pleased me tremendously and left me wanting more!

Stage Tossa de Mar – Sant Feliu de Guixols – 23.5 km
After a wonderful night in Tossa de Mar and having discovered the nice town, I continued walking along the Catalan coast. The weather was more unsettled again and it was quite windy when I walked uphill. It was a beautiful path that led me upward, after which I got the most beautiful views over the surroundings again. Especially with those ominous clouds you get beautiful photos!

Somewhere halfway through the walk I unfortunately chose a wrong turn which made me cover many more elevation meters, especially the descent is always difficult for my knee. But fortunately the routes came together again and I could continue my way on the GR92, Sender Mediterraneo. After this came really the most beautiful part of this day. A rough path brought me upward and at Puig les Cols I could take a good look at the surroundings.

This day started with a beautiful walk through a nature area along the coast. Many shady spots and beautiful glimpses I got even before I came to my first coffee stop in Platja de San Pol. It was wonderful weather again and how good life feels then!
When I continued I came across beautiful stately buildings on the wild coast, it makes you dream of long-gone times. What beautiful places they had chosen to live!

Walking further I came to Platja D’aro, the place where my parents celebrated their first vacation together. How nice is that?
There on the boulevard I took a seat on a terrace and ate a delicious lunch. When I continued I was allowed to pass various beaches to eventually come out on the long boulevard to Palamos. What a wonderful day it had been again.

Stage Palamos – Begur 22.5 km
After a wonderful night with a nice breakfast in the morning, I walk through Palamos to come to a nature area on the other side. It doesn’t take long before I encounter the first nice bay with colorful houses. I read that in former times they often came here in winter to bask in the sun that warmed this area.
I sit there for a moment to absorb the atmosphere and experience the feeling of it. As I then continue I come to walk alternately through nature and over constructed paths along the Catalan coast. I’m constantly amazed by the views I get but also by how good the paths are. The local population also makes extensive use of these walking paths and so they are well maintained.

When I walk through a nature area again I suddenly see people in front of me and a little later I see the view they’re looking at. It’s Cala s’Alguer, really a beautiful spot. A small bay with the nicest colorful houses. I join for a moment and decide to visit Cala s’Alguer myself later. What a beautiful place!
Later I pass a lovely beach where I sit for a moment and when I continue I take my lunch break in Calella de Palagrugell. After this comes the most challenging part of the entire walk. Steep climbs and descents bring me along the coast and to the next town Tamariu. From there I go inland again to climb to Begur. It’s then still a walk of about 1.5 hours that I want to complete before dark.

Stage Begur – Torroella de Montgri 21.5 km
Begur is really a beautiful centuries-old town and the evening before I had briefly walked through the streets. Years ago I had been there before, otherwise I would have really given a bit more time to this place. Now I continued to admire the next place: Pals. Also such a beautiful centuries-old place that deserves attention when you’re there. I walked through various streets and looked briefly in the church that was open. And of course I enjoyed a nice cup of cappuccino on a terrace.
After this I came to walk through the ‘countryside’ of Catalonia, also very nice to experience. The path still brought me to a beautiful viewpoint Puig de la Font Pasquaia. Here I briefly enjoyed the beautiful view, it was quite windy and I started to get cold.

A little further from the coast and through seemingly deserted villages. I saw the bus pass by when I took a short break in Palau-Sator, nobody got on but nobody got off either.
I continued and after a very long, boring road along an empty canal and later a beautiful river, I came out in the town of Torroella de Montgri.

Stage Torroella de Montgri – L’escala 21 km
I started that last walking day on time with the climb up to the castle. A nice warming up right away. I looked at the castle briefly and then walked into the nature area. After a while I saw movement in front of me and when I looked better, and stood still, I finally saw several mountain goats pass by. The first wildlife sighting for me on the Camino de Ronda, how super nice!

The area was great to walk through, you walk high and therefore also have many beautiful views with the coast in view now and then. After a time I actually came out at the coast again, at the beautiful Mirador de la Punta del Mila.

After this it was still a challenging walk over paths along the wild Costa Brava coast of Catalonia. Now and then descending to a bay and finally through a small village to dive into a nature area once more before I finally arrived at the harbor of L’escala.
Because I couldn’t sit on a terrace anywhere that day, I found it a somewhat heavier day but again a beautiful walking day on the Camino de Ronda.
