GR92 – Costa Brava hiking Trip- Stage Begur to Torroella de Montgri – Spain
|November 2023 I walked for several days along the beautiful Costa Brava coast of Spain. This report describes already day 5 on the GR92, a wonderful Costa Brava hiking trip. I walked super and thoroughly enjoyed the surroundings, the beautiful rugged coastline of the Costa Brava of course but also the different villages I passed through with the varied nature in between. Day 5 of this Costa Brava hiking trip took me from the ancient town of Begur to Torroella de Montgri.

GR92 – Costa Brava hiking trip
Stage Begur to Torroella de Montgri
The beautiful town of Begur where I had spent the night is a bit further away from the coast and also immediately a lot higher. Initially, I walked out of the town the wrong way, pointed out by a local man who didn’t really let me talk but knew where to go…. I ran into him again when I left the town a little later on the other side. He was very surprised about it and thought I should have been clearer, haha!
He was a nice chatty man but if he had made me say something more at first I would have gone right ahead. I didn’t really care either, I walked quietly downhill out of the town and more inland.
I first walked through a beautiful wooded area before climbing a little more. I walked to the wonderful town of Pals. Like Begur, I had also been there a few years ago. Beautiful old worn-out streets with old buildings and passages, really an impressive sight. I sat in a little square there to enjoy dt town with fine cappuccino. Then I walked briefly through the streets of Pals.

After this, I continued walking along some long roads through a beautiful landscape with a sizeable row of mountains on the horizon. I ended up in a seemingly deserted town where I found a bench on a small square and ate some nuts. The local bus came and had to make an impossible turn there which only just succeeded. It will be your route…no one got on or off….
Puig de la Font Pasquaia
As I continued walking, I got a slightly bigger rise and, as a result, I came upon a nice viewpoint. On the sign I saw that this was called Puig de la Font Pasquaia. There was a strong wind there, I enjoyed the view and the sun on my back for a while…and walked back down on the other side. A village later, I took another short break. This time at a children’s playground on a bench. I took off my shoes and socks, ate my banana there…. What a super relaxing day it was again.
When I continued walking after this, it was another long boring road along a dry canal. After the bend, it got nicer with some greenery, a kind of park. Here though it was a river I was walking along, the River Ter. Crossing this river with a nice bridge, I walked straight into the town of Torroela de Montgri and looked for my hotel.
I did not like the town of Torroela de Montgri itself very much. It has long roads with tall buildings along them, so little sun comes into the streets. A few nice little squares still give it some air/light…. The main road is set up a bit wider with a sort of park in the middle where you can sit. It does have a nice big church though, which I briefly visited later that afternoon.

Stage Begur to Torroela de Montgri
I had dinner at a restaurant on that long wide thoroughfare and the next morning sat at the busy local bakery (Panaderia Casamoner Torroella) enjoying my breakfast before starting the climb. This climb brought me to a beautiful viewpoint and remnant of a castle.
More on this in the next update on this Costa Brava hiking trip, of course.
Numbers of stage Begur – Torroella de Montgri
This walking day brought me 21.5 km of walking in 5 hours. The signs indicated 6 hours and I can’t say I hiked that much faster now. This day I went up 400 metres and down 250 metres.
Where to Stay?
I had my stay at the nice Fonda Mitja, it was clean and had a great bathroom. The people hosting it were nice and the hotel is situated in the centre, just a bit off the route.

Cami de Ronda – Red/white flags
Did you know that the GR92 is also called the Cami de Ronda? I did see that too on the signs here and there. The route is really perfectly signposted everywhere. I often have a gpx of the route from the internet but luckily I don’t need it much on this route. The entire Cami de Ronda has 10 stages with starting point Portbou and finishing point Lloret de Mar (where I started). If you were to walk the whole route you would have hiked over 187 km.
