Avdenturous hiking trip on Majorca – Multi-day hiking tour on the GR221 and discover Palma, Soller and Valdemossa – Spain

Read all about the perfect adventure hiking trip in Majorca! A week where you’ll go on a multi-day hike on the GR221 in Majorca’s beautiful Serra de Tramuntana mountains. But where there is also time for beach and where you can enjoy the culture and history Mallorca has to offer.

Initially, I went for a multi-day hiking trip and in the meantime I found out that Majorca had much more to offer. As a result, I can now inspire you for this adventurous one-week hiking trip.

Avdenturous hikingtrip on Majorca - Multi-day hiking tour on the GR221 and discover Palma, Soller and Valdemossa - Spain

The GR221 runs across the amazing Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. The ideal setting for an adventurous hiking trip in Majorca. The Serra Tramuntana is a UNESCO-protected hiking area in Majorca. Over this mountain area runs the long-distance hike GR221 also called Ruta de Pedra en sec (translated: dry stone route / Dry Stone Route). After three days on the route, I understood what they mean by this.

Adventurous hiking trip on Majorca
Hiking on the GR2221 – Spain

My adventure hike in Mallorca, on the GR221, ended up being only 3 days due to high hotel costs. However, 4 great stages of this beautiful and challenging route. And so I had the other 3 days nice time to also explore the culture and history of this island a bit.

So now I have the ideal itinerary for an adventurous 1-week hiking trip that also includes discovering the culture and history of Mallorca.

Route GR221 Serra Tramuntana

The entire GR221 is 140 km long and runs across the entire Serra Tramuntana. The GR221 has 10 stages that run from village to village. So I may plan another trip in that direction to explore the other stages. The best thing to do then is to go with a hiking buddy so I can share the hotel costs.

The hikes in the Serra de Tramuntana were really great! In retrospect, it was just a perfect week. One day I was in Palma, I went at my leisure to the start of the hike in Port Andratx. After 3 days of biking on the GR221, I had some time to do some sightseeing there (Valdemossa and Soller)-what more could you want?

Coming and going on Majorca

I flew into Palma de Mallorca from Amsterdam. There are several direct flights. When I travelled on again, I got on the ferry to Barcelona. You can also catch the ferry to Valencia. I paid around 17 euros for the ferry to Barcelona and it took me around 7 hours.

(Ps. on the Ferry, the wifi is not free and your connection does stop after an hour)

Stay on Majorca

In Palma I stayed in a hostel and there I paid around 25 euros per night so that was fine but once on the road, 80 to 100 euros for a night’s stay was quite normal. I wasn’t prepared for that and soon the fun was gone for me anyway. I then decided to go hiking on the GR92 on the Costa Brava.

Later in this blog, I will name each day and include a link to where I stayed and the price.

Day 1 Palma discover

If you are in the city of Palma, of course you have to visit the impressive cathedral. You can’t avoid it, almost everywhere you are you see cathedral towering high above the city. A very impressive building so close to the coast.

Next to Palma Cathedral is the palace which I also visited. Very interesting to walk through the beautiful halls but also the small corridors and many stairs leading to the different rooms. From the windows you look far out to sea and, of course, you have a view of the port.

In addition, you can visit the Arab baths. Or how about walking inside the old Llotja de Palma. This large building almost seems to have been a church but I understood that it had actually been a place of trade. Makes sense so on the coast near the port.

Other than that, you just have to walk a lot, go through many streets to see and notice how old and rich this city is.

Of course, you can also go to the beach if you want to enjoy the sun and sea a bit in advance.

Day 2 – Pequera

I headed for Pequera after visiting Palma. There I could find a hotel for a suitable price and the next morning I could easily continue by bus to Port Andratx to start the walk. Pequera is a real tourist village with several small coves where you can enjoy lying on the beach. There are also dozens of restaurants along the beach and along the long through road that runs parallel to the beach. I found it a lovely day of rest, a real holiday before the hard work started.

Day 3 – Hiking from Port Andratx to  Sant Elm

This day began my adventure on the island of Majorca. I caught the bus from Pequera to Port Andratx after a breakfast in Pequera. At Port Andratx, I got off at the port and was able to follow the route to Sant Elm using my downloaded GPX. Walking along the harbour, I curved off to the right, leaving the coast behind me and climbing uphill. Into the Serra Tramuntana, the mountains I would be hiking in for the next few days.

The walk this day is both challenging and a fine hike. The mountain hike starts so assume there are some steep ascents in it. The stage is only 3 hours so you have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. The views are amazing! Nature is beautiful and if you are lucky you will see some goats or other wildlife.

Today’s final destination is Sant Elm, which is also a very nice town to explore for a while. With a nice beach and a nice shopping street with many restaurants, I could have a great time there for the rest of the day. Lovely change on this adventurous Majorca hiking trip

Day 4 Hiking from Sant Elm to  Estellencs (Banyalbufar)

On this day, I did a monster hike, for my part…. The original stage goes to Ses Fontanelles, there is a finca where you can stay overnight. These asked the top price for an overnight stay so I decided to hike on to Estellencs.

The walk to Ses Fontanelles is beautiful, you walk along the coast for a while and pass an old monastery. In the process, you have views of the island of Dragonera off the coast of Sant Elm each time. The second stage on this day was quite a climb and mostly walking on rocky paths. It was also partly poorly signposted which also made it difficult. All in all, a very strenuous day but also such beautiful views!

Just before I reached Estellencs, I raised my thumb and hitchhiked to my lunch. After my lunch, I walked a short distance out of Estellenc but hitchhiked again to Banyalbufar where I had arranged my overnight stay at Hostal Se Baronia. A wonderful place to rest after an exhilarating and sporting day.

Day 5 Hiking from Esporles to Valdemossa

After a good night’s sleep, I decided to catch the bus to Esporles. From there, I picked up the last stage of this adventurous Mallorca hiking trip. The stage from Esporles to Valdemossa gives you some nice views of the surrounding area and in terms of climbing, it is also quite challenging. The walk took about 3 hours which also gave me time to explore Valdemossa finely in the afternoon.

After the afternoon in Valdemossa, I took the bus to Soller. A super nice town where that evening I sat on the square near the cathedral and was amazed by the little train/tram that still runs there.

Day 6 Soller – Back to Palma with the steam train

After a good night’s sleep, you could check out Soller in the morning or catch the tram to Port Soller. You could then spend the morning exploring the coast and discovering Port Soller and when you return to Soller catch the last train to Palma.

In retrospect, I regret not taking a look at Port Soller. It was a rainy day, a perfect day also to stop so. I was glad when I got to Palma and could walk around in the sunshine again.

Day 7 last day in Palma

On this last day in Palma, you can visit the places you hadn’t seen yet or which you would like to revisit.

Where did I stay during my trip on Palma de Mallorca?

All the hotels and hostels where I stayed will be briefly described below. With, of course, some links to them so you can book them right away if necessary. In the summer period, I think you have to be quick to book them.

Palma de Mallorca

  • Y Hostel A fine hostel which is quite a bit outside the city centre. There, I paid €55.80 for 2 nights ( with them, you have to join Hostelling International for 10 euros if you are over 30) Here, I did have a curtain that allowed me to close my capsule
  • We Hostel, a nice hostel which is located on the edge of the city centre. Very clean and nice hostel where I paid €25 for one night. Here I was in a room with two bunk beds.

Sant Elm

Banyalbufar

  • Hostal Sa Baronia – There I paid €100 and that did include breakfast. I loved this building in a super location in Banyalbufar.

Soller

  • Hostal Nadal – There I paid €58.90. A fine hostal where I had my own room with washbasin and a shared toilet and shower. There is a nice courtyard garden where you can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Travelling by bus on Majorca

In Majorca itself, it’s super easy to travel by public transport. The bus runs regularly between the places I visited during my week. The cheapest way is if you check in with your bank card/phone when you get on the bus and check out again when you get off. I saw each time that €20 was reserved but after some time, a few euros were deducted. I travelled on different routes on public transport in Majorca.

Avontuurlijke wandelreis op Mallorca - Spanje - Prachtige vergezichten

From the airport to Palma itself is standard €5.00 and if you travel within the city it is €2.00. I paid from Palma to Pequera €4.00 and that was about 40 minutes by bus.

Hitchhiking on Majorca

Like last spring in Greece (Karpathos), I went hitchhiking twice. The bus runs between the smaller towns regularly but when you are halfway through a village it obviously doesn’t work. When I came off the trail and wanted to go to Estellencs I had a lift from two Poles in no time and when I wanted to continue after my lunch I soon got a lift from a German. So the tourists are inclined to offer you a lift if you are on the side of the road.

Safety while hitchhiking

Of course, I always pay attention to whom I get into the car. If I don’t think the driver or an occupant of the car is a nice person then I thank them. Safety always comes first of course. You might think it comes across as ungrateful but I have nothing to do with that. Safety comes before politeness of course.
