Torroella de Montgri to L’escala – 20 km – Hiking on the GR92 Camino de Ronda – Spain

The 6th day of hiking on the GR92 Camino de Ronda. Time flies… I had a great time and I was really comfortable. It did start to get a bit chilly in the evenings (Nov ‘23) but during the day it was still lovely! Full of good spirits, I also started this 6th day, going back to the Costa Brava coast, to the town of L’escala. Are you reading along again?

Hiking on the GR92 Camino de Ronda

After a nice breakfast at the local bakery in Torroella de Montgri, I left to go up immediately. Yesterday I had already seen where to go – the castle at the top of the mountain. Or at least, the remains of it. The GR92 Camino de Ronda took me right up the mountain and so I went slowly, so every time I looked back at the ever-widening view.

Once I reached the top, I saw the remains of castell del Montgri.

Of course, I went in and climbed on top. You can, if you’re in the courtyard, find a staircase up in 1 of the corners so that you get to the old outer wall. There, of course, you do get the best views of the surrounding area.

After enjoying it for a while, I walked back down. Somewhere there on the plain, I did take out my selfie stick from the bag and took a yoga pose photo. I hadn’t done that very much this trip.

I had to take a picture like this also right?

Parc Natural del Montgri

After this, I continued the trail on the GR92, Camino de Ronda. The directions became quite unclear at one point during the rather steep descent. I saw in the distance where I had to go and just focused on that and looked for the best descent in the meantime. It was quite a steep bit so there was some challenge there. And I had to keep my attention. So few photos… It’s like that, isn’t it? I’d like to take you on the hike and I’ll do that here with words, not visual support.

Later, when I walked into the Parc Natural del Montgri nature reserve, I saw another large group of people walking. They were on a guided tour, it seemed, explaining the flora and fauna. They often stood still and there was a lot of talking.

So my surprise was very great when, a bit further on, I suddenly saw movement in front of me. When I looked more closely, I saw that they were big mountain goats. First I saw 1 and when it started moving, most probably because of me, 3 more came after it. They were quite close to me and I was about holding my breath to keep them from running away faster. Very slowly and looking around, they ran diagonally in front of me down…. Eventually about 5 or 6 mountain goats walked by with the last one being the biggest male which also had a bit more colour, black, grey and brown.

I could still check them out and enjoy them. How nice!

As I continued walking, I found myself walking through a beautifully diverse piece of nature. In the distance I began to get a better view of the coast and I suspected I was starting to get close to L’escala . I sat down on the side for a short break, I knew I wouldn’t come across a place for a lunch break so I had a tin of olives with me and a granola bar. Enjoying the scenery and weather, I ate my lunch, sitting on a stone.

Mirador de la Punta del Mila

As I continued walking, I came back into the inhabited world, I met some day-trippers walking or cycling in the area. And suddenly I found myself at a kind of camper place with a kind of artwork made of concrete in the middle. What exactly it was I don’t know but suddenly there were a lot of people.

And I can understand why because the view there was really great. I was at Mirador de la Punta del Mila and enjoyed the view with the other people. Photo 1 in this update was also taken here.

After this, the route took me down the rugged coast, again on beautiful paths. I was taken all the way down so I briefly walked through a small bay and then the Camino de Ronda GR92 took me back up. There I walked on challenging narrow paths, occasionally walking only slightly higher than where the path seemed to be as this seemed a little too close to the precipice to me. I walked through a forest and had the most beautiful views each time. What a beautiful stretch this was again!

At one point I arrived at a village, for a moment I thought I was there. But no, I was at Montgo a small village just before L’escala. At the beach I was led right through the village and on to the other side of this little peninsula. Here again I ended up at a very small beach and disappeared into a nature reserve. Again beautiful views over the azure blue sea and into the woods, again a little higher and walking nice paths.

You can’t call this a hiking path right?

I found the last part of this day’s hiking on the GR92 Camino de Ronda really challenging. The paths along the rough coast but also the directions that, because I obviously did not stay on the path every time for safety reasons, were not always seen by me. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this challenge, the views and just being on foot in beautiful nature in a beautiful country. What more could you want?

The bay just after Montgo

After this bay and the nature reserve between Montgo and L’escala, I ended up at the port of L’escala. For a moment I thought I had to pass it on the sea side but that was not the intention, unfortunately. I walked straight into the streets of L’escala and because I always find it difficult to follow the route in such streets, I just entered the address of my hotel in google. That turned out to be a bit of a walk, as I was in the old nicer part.

This was also the last day I was hiking on the GR92. There was no night on the stage after this, it ends in the middle of a nature reserve. I would then have to arrange a taxi oid to go back to L’escala or to the next stage. I didn’t feel like that and so the next day I went to Girona by bus. From there, I went back to Barcelona before flying back to the Netherlands.

Distance, height and duration

I walked for 6 hours and only took a short break in between. The route is 21 km long and during this day you will ascend about 560 and descend 540 metres..

Lunch on the way?

You’ll have to take care of those yourself because on this stage you won’t pass through a village or anywhere to find a restaurant.

Where to stay in L’escala

I had near an old part of L’escala my hotel. This was near the little beach Placa de la Sardana I found this a super nice place to take a stroll in the evening. there was a lot of education about the different old buildings that were there. Very informative and fun to see. There are also many restaurants and bars in that part.

I was at the Rallye hotel and that was fine. I was there in the post-season and for that reason I could not get breakfast there at that time. Look at your options for L’escala
