First day hiking on the GR92 in Spain – Lloret de Mar to Tossa de Mar, Costa Brava
|In Nov 23, after a few days in Mallorca and a day in Barcelona, I left for Lloret de Mar to hike from there on the GR92, the camino de Ronda or Sender Mediterrani. So hiking along the coast of Spain’s Costa Brava. For me, this hike started in Lloret de Mar because on the map I had seen that it then went really close to the coast for a few days and I was looking forward to that!
Previously, I walked the Fishermen’s Trail and I really liked those views. So on day 1 of my adventure walk along the Costa Brava, I walked from Lloret de Mar to Tossa de Mar.

GR92 – Camino de Ronda – Sendero del Mediterraneo
This long-distance hike the GR92 is also called Sendero del Mediterraneo or Camino de Ronda. The entire route is a whopping 584 km long and starts in Portbou, just below the French border, and ends at the Puente de Olivar in Ulldecona after 31 stages. Read more about hiking the GR92 on the site of Catalunya.
The weather was still lovely, a little chilly in the morning but the sun soon came through. After a cappuccino and sandwich on the promenade of Lloret de Mar, I left.
How do you follow the GR92 / Camino de Ronda?
From the promenade in Lloret de Mar, I easily followed the red/white flag. This is used for all long-distance walks. In the Netherlands you come across them for e.g. the Marskramerpad or more famously the Pieterpad. But in Austria, I had followed this red/white flag on the Alpe Adria Trail.
My first day of hiking on the GR92 in Spain
Lloret de Mar toTossa de Mar on the GR92
While walking on the GR92, I passed the castle of Lloret de Mar and then continued on rocky paths along the coast. Each time I kept a view of the beautiful waters of the Balearic Sea below me. Looking back after a while, I saw Lloret de Mar in the distance with the castle I had just passed along the coast. The path was really great. Each time slightly up or down via stairs and occasionally through a rock subway. Here and there, some viewpoints had been created where you could sit and enjoy this beautiful Costa Brava coast.
After a while, the path brought me up and I walked into a neighbourhood. The GR92 walking route is perfectly signposted and I did not have to make any effort to follow it. After several long streets, I passed a hotel/bakery where I could buy a nice cup of coffee. Snug in the sunshine next to the pool, I drank it. What a nice day it already was!
After the short break, the GR92 took me back to the coast. I took it easy and sat in the sun on the beach. Enjoying the sun and the temperature in November. How nice?
When I continued walking after this, I came to walk along a long road and then into some kind of nature reserve. Time and again I heard motorbikes and every now and then they passed by. On the wide dirt roads that ran undulating through the landscape, you could of course enjoy motorcycling. I don’t blame them for that.
I walked out of the nature reserve back down the hill and ended up in Tossa de Mar. I had completed the first day without a hitch. The route had been perfectly marked, the GR92 had been surprising and versatile this day. Glad to be here and having made the choice to walk along the Costa Brava coast, I went in search of my hotel.
The Spanish coast and its life – Tossa de Mar
Stay in Tossa de Mar
In the old town, just next to the old wall, I had booked a super nice hostal, hostal Codolar. There I paid €40.59 for one night. I was a little too early to be allowed into my room already even though it had already been 2pm. But all too happy I left my bag behind and put on the flip-flops and continued walking. Now not as a hiker but as a day tourist. Lovely!
AT hostal Codolar I had a nice breakfast included that next morning. The room was clean and the shower was lovely! And from the window I just had a view of the old wall and tower.
Stay in Lloret de Mar
Before hiking, I stayed in Solesperit, paying €43.44 for one night. Another fine hotel in the centre of the town. I really liked that there was a kettle available. The shower was very nice and the room had a small balcony which is of course nice if you want to dry some laundry.
Distance, altitude and time – Lloret de Mar to Tossa de Mar
The distance of this stage is 14.3 km. You will also descend 669 metres and ascend 670 metres. After my breakfast, around 09.30, I left Lloret de Mar and around 14.00 I was in Tossa de Mar. So it took me about 4.5 hours. I took two breaks during this stage.

Highlights for Tossa de Mar
If you’re in Tossa de Mar then you go and have a look around, right? My hostal was right next to the old wall so I dove into that area. What super fun to walk around there! You get great views of the Costa Brava coast if you go all the way up to the lighthouse. I did this during sunset. Initially, I walked through the small streets of the old town and ended up at a church ruin and a statue of Ava Gardner.
If you then walk back towards the centre of Tossa de Mar, there are also some churches to visit and, as befits a tourist resort, you can of course do a lot of shopping. I found it a very nice town to spend part of the afternoon and evening like this.
